IT'S ONLY SLOW CAUSE YOU HAVE NO NIGHTCLUB
PROMOTIONS
By Rich Unger
The phone rings, it's another club owner, " It's so
slow, I am giving away free drinks, no cover, and nobody is coming in."
I yawn, same old song, different singer. Summer can either make you
or break you.
It's all up to you. When you take a club that
has a bland reputation and energize it with "THE FUN." It's so
fascinating to me that Nightclub Owners and Bar Owners just don't get it.
They think that giving away their profits, letting patrons in for free and
bringing in the same local bands is going to make them money?
Mention a new idea and they hesitate. Tell
them about fresh new fun and they look at you like Saddam just got out of
his spider hole. Explain to them that the reasons they are slow are
all their own, they deny it, they blame their competition and they change
the subject. It never fails.
Look at your club, why on earth would anyone want to
come in, let alone come back? It's interesting to watch clubs react
to their competition, they lower prices, drop the cover, offer more drink
specials, and yet no more patrons come in. I had a club Owner in
Springfield call me, they are running the worst promotions I have ever
seen, I speak to him about everything he is doing wrong, I explain to him
that he is too new of a club to be in such a horrible lack of traffic flow
position.
I speak to another club Owner in Idaho, she just
gives away cheap beer and drinks and relies solely on the liquor and beer
companies to provide her promotions. The only objection I have to
this kind of constant lean on me promoting, is you are giving away drinks,
rather than putting the focus on "THE FUN" and making full price on a
drink? I watched a club owner go from doing over a million dollars a
year, to 35% of that because of his own ego, arrogance, and control freak
mentality. We are going into Summer now, your club should be jammed,
if you have an outside deck you should be double jammed, if your located
on the water you should be tripled jammed.
But no, you will continue set in your ways and not
reach out and realize it's an entirely new Nightclub World. Go to
the TOP 40 on radio right now and see if you can recognize one song or
artist? Go to the Top Ten Movies, and see if you have seen or desire
to see any of them? Go to the Mall and see the fashion of today and
tell me you are wearing it? My point is you are out of touch, you
lost your knack for knowing the pulse of what is happening in pop culture
today?
This is "Ripley's Believe It Or Not," but this is "Richie's
Reality." I have taken clubs from zero Tuesday nights to $4,000 from
zero Wednesday Nights to $4,000. With no cover charge and no drink
specials.
It's called "Promotions." It doesn't matter if your bar holds only
125 wall to wall those are the easy ones to pack, to clubs that hold 1000
ah I love a challenge. Big, small bring them on.
It's only slow cause you are not offering any
promotions. I know a club owner with the worst reputation and the
worst club, he goes thru 300 cases of beer a week, why? Because he
is relentless when it comes to promotions. He always has something
going on.
Again, I don't mean drink specials.
I do mean "THE FUN."
I know another club owner who prints up 30,000
flyers and hires a "street team" to distribute them, well those days are
gone. Flyers are meaningless, they serve no purpose and you can rant
and rave all you want how effective they are, but your kidding yourself.
Not one Club Owner who has successful Weeknights can
ever attribute them to flyers. I have seen flyers big, small, loaded
with information, empty of a lot of information, the bottom line, you want
packed nights, you need solid promotions.
I have seen owner after owner pump so much $$$$$
into lasers, lights, sound, dance floor and then wonder why nobody
patronizes their club.
The days of the DJ in the old booth hidden away and
out of reach and access to the patron is over with.
The days of allowing Door Personnel to look intimidating and rough tough,
are over with.
And the nights of being slow and dead are over with,
if you offer and present promotions.
It's all up to you.
