GIVE ME YOUR CLUB MAKE IT REAL, OR ELSE FORGETABOUTIT!

By Rich Unger

I read comments all over the Internet on nightclubs, I see people selling books, seminars, that supposedly will give you the insight to pack your club?  I ask how can a book with 500 promotions, how can a seminar, apply to every single food, beverage, entertainment venue in the world?  They can't !!!!!!

Each community, each nightclub, each restaurant, each bar, each lounge, each pub, each grille, has a life of it's own and must be treated as such.  Last year, I consulted and provided an analytical overview for an adult entertainment club, a grille located on a country club, I Italian restaurant, a waterfront seafood restaurant, a hotel and suites complex, a downtown upscale eatery, a sports bar/club and I never ever set foot in any of their operations.

Let me repeat that.....I never ever set foot in any of their places.  How did I prepare for them a hands on, in your face strategy and directional guide?  Simple, what comes easy for me, others must charge for airfare, hotels, time, travel, expenses, and then come meet you.  Why???????  From Wisconsin, to Florida, from California to Michigan, I didn't fly, or drive to any of these clients.

I simply had them answer 40 questions for me in complete detail and in great length that addresses every single phase of their entire operation.  I had them supply me with photos of their entire outside and inside, I had them provide me a floor plan, any menus and flyers and all marketing they do.  Then I complied all this on our conference room table, and within 96 hours of receipt of this information, I FedEx back to my clients a complete detailed, concise overview of their operation.  What they need to change, what they need to cease doing, what they need to implement.

There is a market out there aside from the hip hop gangsta crowd, even in the cities, upscale, wild beach theme, jazzy and just smooth, to just plain dance clubs, what you charge, what your dress code is, what your atmosphere is, what your drink prices are, how you market and advertise, what theme nights, and special events you have, I see so much of the "sop", same old promotions, nothing new, nothing hot, in my own city, an ex Baja Beach Club manager put some partners together opened up a club with very little interior change, some lights, and sound and is packing them in.

It's nothing new, but it's brand new to my community.  Interestingly enough, the Baja Beach Club in Orlando, Florida closed down, and now is a hooters.  You'd think Baja would be sharp enough to be cutting edge in Orlando the #1 tourist destination in America, but sadly they took their body shots and booty themselves out of town.

You see competition is fierce, for instance in my town there is a disco only on weekends that I opened in an upscale restaurant for a client of mine, he has since sold it 3 years ago, and yet the new owner has not changed a thing in regard to atmosphere, decor, video or visual or audio improvements, so now the downward turn is occurring, the owner Michael Klauber is an excellent food man, but when it comes to nightlife and   entertainment and current trends and changes and keeping it real, sadly he is in over his head.

And now he is being challenged by new clubs and formats opening, instead of laying over and playing dead, he should have reformatted his format and re-positioned himself to better prepare for any challenges and newcomers.  But he didn't and now his volume drops and his revenue follows suit.  So many bar owners refuse to expand and excite their patrons, they simply open the doors and do the same volume over and over.
for some reason I will never fathom, they have no motivation to really make
money and give people something new?

I see so many message boards with the same question "anyone have any new
promotion ideas?" I mean of course there are hundreds of new ideas, concepts and promotions but what works for one lounge, club or bar, may not work for another. there are many many factors that are important to presenting a strong promotion.
